Supply 3rd-Part Finisar Optical Transceiver

SFP transceiver is hot-swappable in industry-standard cages and connectors, and offers high-speed performance in a compact package. SFP is used to data rates up to 4 Gb/s and DWDM, including tunable versions. SFP and SFP+ (enhanced SFP) transceivers are interchangeable and can be used in the same cages as SFP transceivers. The electrical interface to the host board is a serial interface.
SFP+ is a standardized form factor for fiber optic transceivers and is used in datacom and telecom optical links, supplying a smaller footprint and lower power consumption than XFP transceivers. Initial standard applications focused on 8G Fibre Channel, 10G Ethernet and 10G Fibre Channel, where the electrical interface to the host board is a standardized serial interface called SFI.The applications have broadened to include SONET OC-192, SDH STM-64, OTN G.709, CPRI wireless, 16G Fibre Channel, and the emerging 32G Fibre Channel application.

About Optical Transceivers

Optical transceivers are available in many different sizes and support many different cabling media and application speeds. You may hear words like, GBIC, mini-GBIC, SFP, SFP+, XFP and others. These support different rates and have different form factors.
A Gigabit Ethernet interface converter (GBIC) is a standard used for the kind of optical transceivers that can be plugged into switches and media converters. This method of plugging a transceiver into a GBIC module slot of a switch, as opposed to having a fixed interface, is also called hot-swappable since the transceiver is loaded into the switch while the switch is powered on. The GBIC standard is determined in the SFF Committee in document number SFF-8053. GBIC transceivers are offered in the -SX, -LX, and -ZX wavelengths and media ranges.
GBICs were created to provide both a small form factor and the flexibility to plug a number of transceiver types into a common electrical interface for Gigabit Ethernet speeds. When a variety of optical port types are needed, an IT administrator can buy GBICs as needed. This lowers the expense of the overall switch system and gives the IT administrator much more flexibility, since they have the choice of different transceiver types. However, if the switch is intended to mostly have one port type, then it will probably be cheaper and take up less space per port to use a switch with that port type built into it. The back of the device has an electrical adapter that plugs into a switch. The front of the transceiver has a SC connector interface for the two 850nm optical ports suitable for use over multimode fiber. One is used for transmitting and the other for receiving signals.
A smaller kind of the GBIC is called a mini-GBIC or SFP (small form factor pluggable) module. It serves the same purpose as the GBIC but has a smaller footprint. To allow for the smaller footprint, SFPs use LC connector interfaces. SFPs are also offered a 1000-Base-T reference to an RJ-45 interface.
The XENPAK transceiver was standardized in 2001 to support 10 Gigabit Ethernet over fiberoptic media and copper media. These come in a number of optical media types and wavelength ranges and also support copper media using a -CX4 interface. They're much bigger in dimension than GBICs and SFPs. After XENPAK was standardized, XPAK and X2 are created to supply a smaller footprint for 10 Gigabit Ethernet. These products share exactly the same electrical interface as XENPAK but are lighter. The XFP small form factor pluggable transceiver was initially developed in 2003 to supply a smaller form factor transceiver for 10Gbps applications than XENPAX, XPAK, and X2 transceivers.
XFP was created by the XFP Multi-Source Agreement Group prior to the development of the SFP+. XFPs supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet, SONET/SDH, and Fibre Channel applications. In keeping with their small form factor, much like SFPs, XFPs use an LC connector interface. XFPs are set up in a similar fashion to GBICs and SFPs, are available in many media type and wavelengths.
The SFP+ transceiver module was created later to assistance 10 Gigabit Ethernet speeds. It's about 30 percent smaller than an XFP, consumes less power, and is more cost-effective. Figure 1 shows various of transceivers.

Brand Compatible SFP For Optical Communications

SFP Transceivers for Telecommunications
The SFP is the more compact optical transceiver used in optical communications. It interfaces a network equipment mother board to a fiber optic or unshielded twisted pair networking cable.
This is probably the most diffused transceiver format available with a variety of different transmitter and receiver types, allowing users to select the appropriate transceiver for each link to provide the required optical reach over the available optical fiber (e.g., multimode fiber or single-mode fiber).
A drawing of a SFP transceiver is presented in Figure 1, where the particular connector for the input and output fibers that, with different dimensions, is present in all the transceivers is evidenced.
A drawing of a SFP transceiver
Figure 1. A drawing of a SFP transceiver
Optical SFP modules are commonly available in four different categories: 850nm (SX), 1310nm (LX), 1550nm (ZX), and WDM, both DWDM and CWDM. SFP transceivers are also available with a copper cable interface, allowing a host device designed primarily for optical fiber communications to also communicate over unshielded twisted pair networking cable.
Commercially available transceivers have a capability up to 2.5 Gbit/s for transmission applications; moreover, aversion of the standard with a bit rate of 10Gbit/s exists, but it can be used only to connect nearby equipment, and is very useful to spare space and power consumption as interface in the client cards of line equipments.
Modern optical SFP transceivers support digital optical monitoring functions according to the industry standard SFF-8472 MSA. This feature gives the end user the ability to monitor real-time parameters of the SFP, such as optical output power, optical input power, temperature, laser bias current, and transceiver supply voltage. (More infomations about SFP transceiver)
SFP transceivers are designed to support SONET, Gigabit Ethernet, Fiber Channel, and other communications standards. A 1000 BASE SX SFP shown in Figure 2.

One common query we hear is actually one must use a Cisco SFP with Cisco hardware? The answer is "not really" although that is not the answer Cisco wants to give. Perhaps you have used third-party compatible SFPs for your networking, and the price gap is obvious.
Brand's SFPs And Third-Party Compatible SFPs
Brand's SFPs such as Cisco, Cisco wants their customers buying only Cisco hardware, which is to say the least more expensive than anyone else on the market. They conduct their own optical transceivers, and try very hard to convince buyers that only official Cisco hardware will work.
Actually, a few of their hardware such as the Catalyst line will not even access third-party SFPs without running undocumented commands first!
That said, it's simple enough to figure around. Plus, either way, the plain truth is that one optical transceiver from a reputable vendor is just as good as any other. It's a totally standardized technology, like spark plugs, and one brand's SFP is going to work fine with any other brand's hardware.
And, like with spark plugs, few people beyond enthusiasts really care about the brand as long as the SFP works once installed.
When you are intending to upgrade your network, it makes sense to "cut corners" when those corners really aren't even being cut at all. Third-party SFP optical transceivers usually cost far less than the "official" units, especially in the case of Cisco, but could supply the exact same performance you'd expect.
To get more brand compatible optical SFP transceivers (10GBASE-ER SFP, 10GBASE-LR SFP, 10GBASE-SR SFP, etc.), or other fiber optics equipment and any other questions you might have about your future networking needs, please don't hesitate to contact Fiberstore for everything you need to know!

Products Used In the Physical Layer

The Physical Layer, as the Layer 1 of ISO OSI Systems communications model where the mechanical and electrical specifications of physical network interface are defined. The physical network interface is considered passive network elements because they do not generate or alter data units traveling across the network. Network elements defined by the Physical Layer include (among others): Network transport media (cables) and connectors.
Network Media Types
Network media types used in Data Center today are copper and fiber optic cables.
The following copper cables are available: Cat 1 to Cat 5, Cat 5E, Cat 6, Cat 6a, Cat7 and Twinax cables. Twinax copper cable with two conductors in a coaxial cable, which is slowly wrapped around each other; originally designed to replace RS-232 and has been redesigned for high-speed computer applications under 10meters.
Fiber optic cable utilize light for data transmission, rather than electrical current on copper cables, Fiber optic cables have many advantages, for example, the are many times lighter and have substantially reduced bulk, no pins, a smaller and more reliable connector reduced loss and distortion, and are free from signal skew or the effects of electro-magnetic interference.
Cable connector types
Copper cable connectors. Currently, there are two copper connector standards are in use, RJ-45 and MRJ-21.
RJ-45: The most popular Ethernet connector in use nowadays. MRJ-21: Used in Brocade’s netlron MLX product family, provides 1GbE connectivity of up to 6 ports by the RJ-45 patch panel or RJ-45 connectors. It is a high-density, high-speed copper cable.
Optical cable connectors. Optical cable connector structure can be divided into: FC,SC, ST, LC, D4, DIN, MU, the MTP,MPO and so on in various forms.
Transceivers are either copper or optical
Copper transceivers, copper medium usually does not require any transceivers, as they are a part of the interface module. However, few of Brocade’s products use a copper SFP with an RJ-45 female connector for 1 GbE connectivity over copper medium, or XFP copper transceiver for 10GbE connectivity over CX4 copper. Figure 1 is a 1000BASE-T SFP Optical Transceiver.
copper sfp
Figure 1. Copper SFP Optical Transceiver
  • XFP 10GBASE-CX4: Uses a CX4 connector to provide a connection to up to 15 meters over CX4 grade copper cable.
  • SFP 1000BASE-TX: Uses a RJ-45 connector to provide a connection to up to 100meters over Cat5e or higher copper cable.
Optical transceivers
The following optical transceivers are available: (Figure 2 is a 10G CWDM SFP 10km Single-Mode Optical Transceiver)

Figure 2. 10G CWDM SFP+ Optical Transceiver
  • SFP: Small form-factor Pluggable. Supports 100Mbps and 1Gbps Ethernet.
  • SFP+: Small Form-factor Pluggable Plus. Looks are physically identical to the SFP port but support higher speeds. Supports 10Gbps Ethernet. Might also support SFP transceivers.
  • XFP: 10 Gigabit Small Form-factor Pluggable. Supports 10Gbps Ethernet.
  • XENPAK: XENPAK transceiver is a hot-swappable I/O devices that plug into 10-Gigabit Ethernet module ports. The XENPAK transceiver is available in either optical or copper interfaces. It is used in typical router line card applications, storage, IP network and LAN.
  • X2: X2 transceiver is a standardized form factor for 10 Gb/s fiber optic transceivers that is used for data transfer rates from 10.3 Gb/s to 10.5 Gb/s. X2 transceiver is used in datacom optical links only (not telecom), and they are smaller than old generation XENPAK transceiver.
  • GBIC) Transceiver: A gigabit interface converter (GBIC) transceiver can send and receive data, which is to digitally convert media between a gigabit Ethernet network and a separate fiber optic based network.
SFP+ Twinax cables are copper cables with two 10G SFP+ transceivers attached on either end. They are also known as Direct Attach Cables (DAC). Using SFP+ Twinax cable is significantly cheaper than connecting devices using two 10Gbps fiber optic transceivers over fiber cable. There are two types of SFP+ Twinax cables: active and passive. SFP+ Twinax cable provided by Fiberstore.com is available in lengths of 1m, 2m, 3m, 5m.
In addition, all those copper or optical products used in the Physical layer can be found in Fiberstore.com.

The Cisco Wireless LAN Controller Configuration

A distribution system port connects the controller to a neighbor switch and serves as the data path between these two devices. This chapter discusses a few common methods on the models that have these options.

Cisco 4402 controllers have two Gigabit Ethernet distribution system ports, each of which is capable of managing up to 48 access points (AP). The Cisco 4404 controllers have four Gigabit Ethernet distribution system ports, each of which is capable of managing up to 48 APs per port. The 4404-25, 4404-50, and 4404-100 models allow a total of 25, 50, or 100 APs to join the controller. The Gigabit Ethernet ports on the 4402 and 4404 controllers accept these SX/LC/T small form-factor plug-in (SFP) modules:

• 1000BASE-SX SFP module which provide a 1000-Mbps wired connection to a network through an 850 nm (SX) fiber-optic link using an LC physical connector.
• 1000BASE-LX SFP module which provide a 1000-Mbps wired connection to a network through a 1300nm (LX/LH) fiber-optic link using an LC physical connector.
• 1000BASE-T SFP module which provide a 1000-Mbps wired connection to a network through a copper link using an RJ-45 physical connector.

The Cisco 5508 controllers have eight Gigabit Ethernet distribution system ports through which the controller can manage multiple APs. The 5508-12, 5508-25, 5508-50, 5508-100 and 5508-250 models allow for 12, 25, 50, 100 or 250 APs to join the controller. Cisco 5508 controllers have no restrictions on the number of APs per port. However, Cisco recommends using link aggregation (LAG) or configuring dynamic AP-Manager interfaces on each Gigabit Ethernet port to automatically balance the load. If more than 100 APs are connected to the 5500 series controller make sure that more than one Gigabit Ethernet interface is connected to the upstream switch. The Gigabit Ethernet ports on the 5508 controllers accept these SX/LC/T small form-factor plug-in (SFP) modules:

• 1000BASE-SX SFP module, which provide a 1000-Mbps wired connection to a network through an 850nM (SX) fiber-optic link using an LC physical connector
• 1000BASE-LX SFP module, which provide a 1000-Mbps wired connection to a network through a 1300nM(LX/LH) fiber-optic link using an LC physical connector
1000BASE-T SFP module, which provide a 1000-Mbps wired connection to a network through a copper link using an RJ-45 physical connector

The Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Switch Wireless Integrated Services Module (WiSM) and the Cisco 7600 Series Router WiSM have eight internal Gigabit Ethernet distribution system ports (ports 1 through 8) that connect the switch or router and the integrated controller. These internal ports are located on the backplane of the switch or router and are not visible on the front panel Through these ports the controller can support up to 300 APs.

The controller network module within the Cisco 28/37/38xx Series WiSM can support up to 6812 or 25 APs (and up to 256, 256, 350or 350 clients respectively), depending on the version of the network module. The network module supports these APs through a Fast Ethernet distribution system port (on the NM-AIR-WLC6-K9 6-access-point version) or a Gigabit Ethernet distribution system port (on the 8-, 12-, and 25-access-point versions and on the NME-AIR-WLC6-K9 6-access-point version) that connects the router and the integrated controller. This port is located on the router backplane and is not visible on the front panel. The Fast Ethernet port operates at speeds up to 100 Mbps, and the Gigabit Ethernet port operates at speeds up to 1 Gbps.

The Catalyst 3750G integrated Wireless LAN Controller(WLC) switch has two internal Gigabit Ethernet distribution system ports (ports 27 and 28) that connect the switch and the integrated controller. These internal ports are located on the switch backplane and are not visible on the front panel Each port is capable of managing up to 48 APs However, Cisco recommends no more than 25 APs per port due to bandwidth constraints. The -S25 and -$50 models allow a total of 25 or 50 APs to join the controller.

Each distribution system port is, by default, an 802.1 Q VLAN trunk port. The VLAN trunking characteristics of the port are not configurable. Some controllers support LAG, which bundles all the distribution system ports of the controller into a single 802.3ad port channel. Cisco 4400 series controllers support LAG in software Releases 3.2 and later; Cisco 5500 series controllers Support LAG in software Releases 6.0 and later; and LAG is enabled automatically on the controllers within the Cisco WiSM and the Catalyst 3750G integrated WLC switch.
