How Much do You Know About 10/100/1000BASE-T SFP Transceivers?

10/100/1000BASE-T SFP
is a triple-speed 1000BASE-T/100BASE-TX/10BASE-T IEEE 802.3az Gigabit transceiver integrated into a single monolithic CMOS chip. It can be used for both Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet applications.
This kind of SFP module supports 10/100/1000BASE-T operation in host systems with Serial Gigabit Media Independent Interface (SGMII), and with it the host systems needn't to support 1000BASE-T autonegotiation. The 10/100/1000BASE-T SFP module uses the 1000BASE-X autonegotiation information it receives from the host to adjust the configuration options that it advertises during copper autonegotiation. To the host system, the 10/100/1000BASE-T SFP will appear to be a fiber transceiver. From the host's perspective, acknowledgements received during the 1000BASE-X autonegotiation process are coming from the remote link partner even though they are coming from the 10/100/1000BASE-T SFP.
The 10/100/1000BASE-T SFP transceiver performs all physical-layer functions for 1000BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, and 10BASE-T Ethernet on standard Cat 5 UTP cable of link lengths up to 100 m (328 ft). 10BASE-T can also run on standard category 3, 4, and 5 UTP. You can safely use Cat 5e or Cat 6 cables, as these are improved versions of Cat 5. For short cable runs, with intricate routing, stranded cable is recommended, as it is more flexible.
Tips: SGMII is a mode of communication between the MAC and PHY to allow for 10/100/1000BASE-T operation. In 100BASE-TX mode, the MAC still transmits to the PHY at 1.25 Gbps, but each byte is repeated 10 times. The PHY then converts this repeated data to 100BASE-TX format. The process is the same in 10BASE-T mode but each byte is repeated 100 times.
Where can we get such cost-effective transceivers? I think most people will think about Cisco, HP, Juniper etc. But their products are not cost-effective at all. As I know, the Finisar SFP modules might be a wiser choice. The part number of Finisar copper 10/100/1000 SFP that supports 10/100/1000 autonegotiation is FCLF-8521-3. The FCLF-8521-3 is based on the proven digital signal processor technology, combining digital adaptive equalizers, ADCs, phase locked loops, line drivers, encoders, decoders, echo cancellers, crosstalk cancellers, and all other required support circuitry integrated into a single chip. With full compliance to IEEE 802.3az standard, the FCLF-8521-3 substantially lower power consumption during periods of low-link utilization.
